Believe it or not, bullying can affect people much beyond childhood. In this video, created in honour of anti-bullying or Pink Shirt Day, you will learn some quick facts on cyberbullying. Pink Shirt Day is a great demonstration of the power we hold to stand up to bullying. Find out more about it here.
In a nutshell, a new kid at school came to his first day wearing a pink shirt and was teased about it. Two older students decided they wouldn’t stand for it. They encouraged everyone they could to wear pink shirts the next day. These boys even bought 50 pink shirts to make a greater impact. BOOM! These kids just showed the world the power of kindness and what can happen if we stand up for each other.
Bullying only has power when others give them that power. To stand up to cyberbullying, don’t click on or read bullying online. If you notice someone shaming or putting someone down for something – don’t encourage or support. If you know someone who is being bullied – reach out to them, create a safe space for them to share and be unique in your approach. Two kids were able to demonstrate incredible support – if we can take a note from them, a simple act can have a major impact!
Don’t forget, adults experience bullying too. This often comes in the form of gossip and exclusion versus verbal or physical intimidation – but not always. We hold the power to show kindness. Each and every one of us. If you or someone you love is being affected by bullying, gossip or other painful social issues reach out.
