A happy food relationship is something all of us need as humans. This video was created to draw awareness to the issue of disordered eating. Disordered eating is different than an Eating Disorder (such as anorexia, bulimia nervosa, etc.). Disordered eating involves having an unhealthy relationship with food. Sometimes that comes in the form of a preoccupation with Clean Eating or calorie counting. Preoccupied thoughts interfere with life. They pop up time and time again and take away from our life.
Disordered eating is more difficult to define because it can be easily hidden. All disordered eating tends to have one thing in common, food is not an enjoyable part of life. This is a problem because food is needed to live. Food is part of our cultures and societies and should be enjoyed as such. When food becomes something of a chore, fixation, or topic for discomfort – it’s time to get help.
You might ask yourself, what’s the big deal? Interestingly, disordered eating if left unchecked can be a recurring issue throughout someone’s life. Further, it can lead to an Eating Disorder diagnosis. Do you or someone you care about have difficulties with eating? Sometimes it’s a tough one to see so look for signs like:
- avoiding going out when food is involved
- finding wrappers/containers from fast-food places in cars or backpacks (but never seeing them eat it)
- or strange eating patterns like always avoiding eating with others
Sometimes these can be a clue that someone (or yourself) might need help. Reach out for some support and check out Eating Disorders Canada for more information on eating disorders.
